It's perfectly fine to say "he's very ill." If people pry, you can say as much or as little as you feel like. It's ok to say, "it's difficult to talk about" or "I don't know." If the people who ask are nice people you can ask them to pray for your father-in-law or ask them to send good thoughts if prayer isn't something you're comfortable with. Most people want an opportunity to do something when people are dying, so asking for prayers/good thoughts gives them a focus for their feelings.
I wish you peace during this difficult time.

Thank them for asking, and let them know how things are. Theyre just being considerate, thoughtful, and nice!
I'm sorry to hear about your father-in-law! :(

Maybe say "he's comfortable" or, "he seems peaceful, at least". Maybe "It's only a matter of time, but he is still communicating". those statements are truthful, yet succinct, short and to the point. I am sorry for your situation. God Bless.

Just thank them for asking and being concerned and tell them the truth. They would rather know that then ask later on and feel bad for not knowing.
