I tried to use that example once. Our school doesn't tolerate beer advertisements on clothing. They say it's a terrible and ill-influential thing, which is a load of bullshit, naturally. So I said, "Why do you tolerate Faust and Shakespeare instead of tolerating beer advertisement?" and I was suspended for saying so. I don't really know if a teacher should be fired for allowing people to read such things, because after all these things are a part of our everyday life on Earth. Remember that these "laws" are here for one person in the crowd who couldn't accept natural society.

No. I actually chuckle when people think life is like Disney and everything comes up roses. Real life isn't like that and the great literature shows that. If you shield your child from everything they will have an awful hard time adjusting to the world.

When I was a Junior, in English Lit we read The Catcher In The Rye which I know is a banned book in many places. My father took one look at that and said 'Good. Now I know they are teaching as they should be.' My father never thought children had to be shielded from the real world.

No absolutly not. To read such material may invoke a sense of empathy for the reader and as such allow emotions that normally are suppressed by religion to be felt. To sack someone over reading of such literature then places the value of the art of writing into jeapordy. Anyone whom supports the sacking of such indivudals should open their eyes to the world and stop living such emotionally intolerant lives.

No, they should NOT be fired. They are simply exposing their students to culture.

Most of the people who are so up in arms about all this are Bible-thumpers. I wonder if those thumpers have ever actually read what is in the Bible. The Bible has sex, murder, suicide, incest, a great king summoning a witch to tell his fortune (the Witch of Endor), etc. Why don't the thumpers get all up in arms about their own Bible? Because they're all hypocrites, that's why.

If you're talking High School, no. Wouldn't bother me a bit. My son has seen worse just watching the news. I'd rather not try to hide the real world from my kid.

But I think this would be a bit much for kids of lower grades. They don't really understand Literature for what it is at those ages.

A teacher that thinks for herself/himself - is too rare to actually think exists. They all follow the guide TO THE LETTER, or else they are in major trouble. If there is just one phone call from a crazy parent - the teacher pays for it with their career.

Best guess.

To your question of being fired - NO! of course not! Books lead to thinking, and that's never a bad thing. (Well except if your a parent or political leader that can't think...)

My son had to read a book in 7th grade that dealt with gay sex, and described it in detaiil. Did I have a fit? Hell no. People need to lighten up, come to their senses, and trust teachers to do their jobs. This entire teacher firing episode is just ridiculous.

No.
You know, at my children's school, when they think there may be something objectionable in the lesson plan, they send home a permission slip. I don't mind signing them, and I appreciate the heads up. And if the parents don't want the child to participate they just say NO and it's honored. Don't they do that in other places?

If they're a sixth grade teacher, probably. If they're teaching an upper-level course in world lit or something, I see no problem with teaching a book containing mature subject matter.
