Carpal tunnel syndrome can improve. So can ulnar tunnel syndrome, which is the one I had. (Carpal tunnel affects your thumb, index and perhaps middle finger. Ulnar tunnel affects your 4th and 5th fingers.) I rarely have any symptoms, and if they do arise, a few days with the exercise I've described below really helps.

A study at the University of Pennsylvania demonstrated that yoga was as effective as surgery in the treatment of carpal tunnel. See if there is a therapeutic yoga class available in your area. In the meantime, here is an exercise which may help your husband:

Stand with your arms straight and raised directly overhead (if you have to bend your arms to get them overhead, then spread your arms out like the "Y" in the YMCA song, but keep your arms straight.) Stretch your palms and all your fingers wide and then clench your hands into fists. Repeat this sequence 10 times a day for a few days, and then repeat it morning and evening.
I hope you find this useful.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is when the ligament in your hand pinches the nerve, therefore you lose sensation or control of your hand. As time goes by the nerve deteriorates because it is being "choked". There are other things to check for, Arthritis is the most common. The best thing to do is to see a hand specialist. Family Docs tend to do general tests, while a specialized hand Doc has more experience with these things.

Your husband may need to see an Orthopedic MD. That is what I had to do. Mine was workers comp., and it took a little while to get in. I did have to have surgery on mine. I have numbness in my right index and thumb. It has been 4 years now. I don't expect feeling to come back. I can still use them but I can't really feel anything. Good Luck to ya'll....
