We have to push really, REALLY hard on the brake pedal, and pull even harder to get it out of park. Getting it back into park is difficult as well, but once we get beyond that point, shifting between other gears is smooth. Anyone else having this problem? And if so, did you find a solution?

if your parking on a hill will make it difficult to shift out of park. check your trans fluid make sure its full. you could have something binding in the shifter cosing your problem. take it to a shop and have it looked at.

Depends on what is happening, but my guess is the shift tube (it's an aluminun tube that connects the shifter handle to the cable) is snapped in half and you are having to push against the broken part to get it to move

The shift interlock can be hanging up also but I've seen a lot more abused shift tubes break on the Explorers of that vintage

Best person to talk to would be a dealer as some independants don't like doing any kind of steering colum work

And no known recalls involving shifters on Fords at this time

Is it on a hill? Try this first before putting it in park install the parking brake then put in park. If it is still hard to get out then the cable may be out of adjustment or has a rough place on it causing this. May be in the transmission but I would think it is in the shifter. The shifter tube that goes into the steering column may be broke and cause this. It can be broke and still shift. Have a trained mechanic to look into this.

all you need to do on the brakes is make the lights come on.Pushing hard has not one thing to do with it.Try turning the steering wheel right and left it will hold pressure on the lever.Ive seen that happen.Try setting the park brake before you put it in park. You problem is in the steering column

is there a button on the shifting lever ? If so push it when you shift out or in to park. On most you need touch the brake also , not stand on it... these are both safety features so before going to extremes and banking on hearsay ,go to a mechanic.

Run, don't walk to your nearest Ford service department and ask them about recalls on this vehicle. I'm not certain, but I believe that Ford recalled a number of vehicles for just this problem.

it's got to do with your break pedal. when you touch your break it should be easy to shift. So tell the repair man just how it's acting and it's likely a simple adjustment they can fix in a few minutes.Or maybe there was a recall onto that same matter.
