Donna I'm 59 and I also have shoulder length hair. The last time I had it cut my mum and my granddaughter, aged 85 and 14 respectively said it looked better longer. I prefer it that way too as I can wear it up or loose, so that's the way it's going to stay.

Elitist, much? - 53 or 59 isn't old, my teen granddaughter says I'm her best friend, we go out together a lot, there's nothing I can't do that she can - and a lot more that I can and she can't!

I think it can be beautiful. Have you seen Broken Flowers? All of those women are over 40 and have gorgeous long hair. I think that the wave of the future for older women will be that they can have long hair without having to feel like they are pretending to be younger.

My question is, why do women over 40 feel the need to have short hair? Is that just a convention? It's not like any of us believe that a 53 year old is old any more, anyway (or is that just because I've gotten closer to 53?) : )

Hey 50 years young here & I have longer hair, slightly below my shoulders. I'm keeping it that way as long as I can. Its what I like & what looks best on me. Not going to cut it just because of my age...phewwwwie on that

If you like long hair then that is all that counts. I am 6 years older than you and my hair is much longer than that because I do not like short hair on me. I find that I have a number of options for hairstyles that I can utilise, more than I could if my hair was short.

At 53, you should have learned by now that what others think about your hair is not important. Wear it any way you want!

Lol, 53 years "young," but it's totally okay for older women to have long hair, but referring to yourself as young is a whole different story.

It is not a matter of age, it is a matter of how you feel about your hair and how it looks to you. I am 58 and my hair is below my shoulders and I have had it short and everyone says "leave it long, you look younger" maybe, maybe not. lol How do you like your hair? That's the question..

Turning 50 is not a reason to get a short and permed hairstyle. Keep the original color unless your gray is a beautiful color.

its fine how long you have your hair. i personally like to keep my hair long and i feel it annoying when as people grow older they cut their hair shorter beause i sometimes go to nursing homes and they have short haired people who's hair is thinning out and its looks kinda weird... im not saying that your old but as you do eventually get THAT old, i like longer hair, just keep it nicely kept and it'll allways look nice.
