I found an opened bottle of Grand Marnier Liquor and don't know how old it is exactly... best guess 2-3 years. I didn't think alcohol could go bad... what's the best rule of thumb? For any liquor, too, would be great!!! Thank you!

Grand Mariner has a better shelf life than most liqueurs. It's 40% alcohol which is higher than most. The citrus component also retains its integrity for a decent amont of time, as well.

Also, how full is the bottle? The amount of space left in the bottle determines how much oxygen is in ther when the cap is replaced. Oxygen is the biggest factor of a liqueur degrading. They don't reall y "go bad" per se, it's just that the flavors oxidise and deteriorate leaving it not tasting fresh.

For spirits, this really isn't the case because the flavors (if any) aren't the product of delicate fruits, berries, herbs, and such. As such, they don't go bad or oxidise in the same fashion. Vodka, in perticular, being a neutral spirit has nothing in it to degrade in the first place, so it's effectively infinite barring evaporation.

It's not that alcohol "goes bad". Alcohol by its nature fights off bacteria and such. It's that the flavor becomes awful.

Think of this. Vinegar is aged grape juice. Wine is slightly aged grape juice. If you let wine sit around for too long it becomes vinegar. Vinegar is certainly not "bad" for you - but I wouldn't want to drink it!

So go ahead and drink it. If it tastes awful, I'd pour it out. We all have different tolerances for bad tasting liquor.

Most liquor doesn't go bad. But I had a bottle of Chambord, and they recommended using within 6 months. Well, let me tell you, they were right! I don't think they had to tell me, I would've figured it out on my own. It was nasty.

I'm pretty sure if you took a sip you would know if it was bad immediately.
