The only rule is 14 clubs in your bag if you want you can have 14 drivers or putters. Basically any combination of 14 clubs you would like.

You are not required to have any specific golf clubs in your bag. You are limited to 14 clubs in competition. You could have 14 drivers or 14 putters, there is no rule. Practical and functional effectiveness say you should have at least a 3 wood, 5 iron . 7 iron, 9 iron and putter. That will get you around the course, add additional clubs for greater effectiveness.

You can choose the golf clubs you want, but 14 is the maximum for official games. For the every day golfer I recommend less clubs in a bag, because you have to carry them around 18 holes long...

Starting golfers and high handicap players - which means you need more than 100 strokes at a par 72 course - don't have to buy a complete golf set right away. You could choose these basic golf clubs:

5-iron
7-iron
9-iron
Pitching Wedge - PW
Sand Wedge - SW
3-wood
7-wood
9-wood
Putter

I recommend the checks for a beginner set of golf clubs at http://www.all-about-lady-golf-clubs.com/beginner-set-of-golf-clubs.html

If you are a mid or low handicapper then you could follow the checklist for a complete golf club set at http://www.all-about-lady-golf-clubs.com/complete-golf-club-set.html an make up a golf set like this:

All irons - 5 through 9
A driver
3-wood, 5-wood, 7-wood, and a 9-wood
A Pitching wedge - PW
A Sand Wedge - SW
A Lob Wedge - LW
A Putter

I always make a mix of golf clubs that can help me in any situation.

I don't think that you're required to have any clubs in particular. You can't have too many. You can putt with a wedge if you want...I do every now and then hehe.

For a minimal set, I recommend a driver because it's by far the most fun club, a putter, a wedge, and at least a few irons (5/7/9 is good). You can get the fairway woods or hybrids and a full set of irons later.

None are required but, you can only have a maximum of 14.

Normally, people have sandwedge through 3 iron, 3 and 5 fairway woods, a driver, and a putter. You can select between a lobwedge, 2 iron, or 7 wood for your 14th club. The trend is to replace the 4, 3, and 2 irons with hybrids.

There is no requirement as to what clubs you should have in your bag. There is a restriction as to how many and that is limited to 14.

Any club that you fancy, as long as it's not more than 14 if you are taking part in a tournament.
You can even use a putter to tee off, or a driver to putt. It's your call.

The minimum is....

1, 3, 5 Wood

1, 3, 5, 7, 9. PW SW Putter

The above is a half set..... the full set is all the missing numbers in between.

you can have 14 clubs in your bag it doesn't matter what they are as long as they conform to the rules of golf.
I would recommend at least a putter.
