My friend was sitting at a red light, motorcycle cop pulled up behind. Started eyeing registration tags and called them in apparently. Pulled my friend over, said he stopped him for windshield but then saw expired tags. Asked my friend to show registration, insurance and driver's license. Friend was driving a truck that didn't belong to him - it's one of his worker's. So he opens the glove and console - no registration, no insurance papers. His own driver's license is expired by 1 month (not it's not ok - he's not taken the time to do it, you know how that goes). This expired license is also out of state (we're in California). Cop then told friend to get out of car, cuffed him, sat him on curb. Truck was impounded. Friend's bail was $3,000. My question: Is this the norm for a situation like this, spending the afternoon in jail and bail like that? What happens now? Doesn't this worker have to pay anything? It wasn't his truck, and he wasn't told by the owner.

Yep that is the norm,
he could not say for sure or prove it had insurnace, and the tag was expired, That is fairly a automatic impound anywhere I have ever been.
He did not own the vechile he was driving, and could not prove it was legally registered. He had no valid drivers licence ( and no, most people don't forget to renew thiers)
And nope, the worker was not driving, he should check those things before using someones truck. he can ask the worker to help pay the fines, but nope the police will hold the driver responsible.

Yes that's how it goes. Expired tags (1+ month) are always a problem. If the truck wasn't registered or insured, the owner of the truck will be responsible for that. The owner of the truck should also be responsible for paying impound fees since he was the one who let your friend drive it in the first place. An expired out of state license is the icing on the cake.
Make sure your friend goes to court as directed and follows all of the judges instructions. A warrant for your arrest is issued if you miss court. That will suck you into the legal system forever if it gets to that.

Your friend was probably arrested for Driving while License Invalid/Suspended. Basically, since his license was expired he was not legally allowed to drive. As far as the law is concerned your friend took responsibility of that vehicle when he drove it. He should have been aware. Your friend could probably gets the other charges, related the vehicle, dropped. If not, he could probably get reimbursement in a small claims court from the vehicle owner. The owner will have to pay to get his truck out of impound. The bail sounds a little high for a first time offense but all cities, counties, and states have different bond standards.

What expired tags are you talking about.
As far as registration, insurance and drivers license, your friend should have checked for those things before he used the truck. Not having time is not an excuse. He did violate the law.

He is the responsible party for not having the registration and insurance papers when asked for them. It doesn't matter if it was the pope's car, bullet proof glass and all, the driver is liable. Tell him to go to court plead innocent, and make a deal with the DA because otherwise he's screwed.

The owner of the truck will have to pay fines for expired registration.
Your friend will have to pay fines for driving without a license.
Did your friend have outstanding warrants? This makes more sense.

Glass shops do it for about $50. Windshield glass is like steel, to stop crack, you ought to stop drill it. then fill in the crack. not a sparkling concept, yet helpful. in case you have a pair of dollars, then purchase the restore kit and do your self, provided which you're feeling mushy doing it.

I would say it is the responsibility of the driver to KNOW those things before they take off in somebodys vehicle. Suppose he had wrecked the vehicle hurt somebody and Then found out it wasnt insured?

i used to be a cop. your friend is responsible for the vehicle that he was driving. as for handcuffing him sometimes it is for officer safety, or he might have thought the vehicle was stolen and not yet reported. as for his license being expired there is no excuse for that.
