I currently have my A+ Cert. but very little "on the phone" tech support experience. I would like to brush up and learn a few more applications such as remote access software, call logging software etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

remote access software:
1 - www.gotomeeting.com
2 - www.webex.com
3 - Microsoft netmeeting

Call logging software:
1 - www.salesforce.com
2 - peoplesoft/siebel (both bought out by oracle)
3 - www.act.com

gotomeeting, webex, salesforce are services so unless you know someone who currently has a subscription, you will not be able to use it. However, I know that gotomeeting does have a free 30 day personal trial though.

our techs also use tools such as:
nslookup or dig to do dns lookups (or www.dnsstuff.com)
telnet to test if a port is open
ipconfig (windows); ifconfig (unix)
tcpdump to sniff network traffic
ethereal to analyze what tcpdump captured
a whole ton of useful tools from http://www.sysinternals.com/

Good luck and don't let people discourage you from doing phone support. Most people start out as a phone support rep and then move around once they gain the experience.
