It does over dry the coat, so we try not to to that much washing except for the very biggest shows. Frankly, for a dog not being campaigned, daily bathing will do more harm than good. It won't change the doggy smell, which mostly comes from the teeth, and it will dull the coat, making the dog worse looking, not better. If you are worried about smells, purchase some doggy toothpaste from the pet store, and use dry dog food. If you want a nicer coat, feed the best quality dog food possible. Dogs have a layer of oil on their fur and skin. By washing your dog everyday, you erode the oil which can make the dog itch and be very uncomfortable.
