The most important thing about to be a gentleman is that people be comfortable around you and your presence a very appreciate as the result of honesty, good sense of humor, elegance, good manner. A gentleman always treat ladies as human being with much respect and never take advantage of weakness to fill his own purpose. A gentleman care about the feeling of others and try always to create a secure atmosphere for all around him. For a gentleman love is everything, family, friends are very important. For a gentleman a wife is his best friend, treat her gentle and showing to her all his love. A gentleman always make his lady laugh and happy. Chances are that his definition of a gentleman are similar to what his upbringing was like. Most likely he had a male role model (perhaps dad) who tried to act like a gentleman in the traditional way; holding doors, standing when a woman arrives or leaves the table to name a couple. This gentleman also had expectations of how a woman should act.
Some of these traits may still hold true, but some are rather outdated. Simply, in my opinion, a man can act as a gentleman if he simply treats his wife the way she desires to be treated. If she likes her doors opened for her, a gentleman would accomodate it. Now, if she demands they be opened, that's another story!

I think many people mistake being a gentleman with opening doors...
A gentleman: Consistently upholds his values and morals, not merely when it's easy.
He doesn't lie, because he doesn't do things that require covering up.
A gentleman believes that he has the power to make people better by his example.
A gentleman doesn't take delight in the failures of others.

"In its best use, moreover, 'gentleman' involves a certain superior standard of conduct, due, to quote the 8th edition once more, to 'that self-respect and intellectual refinement which manifest themselves in unrestrained yet delicate manners'."
to give my own general definition, gentlemen are very polite and respectful. for instance, they might open the door for a lady. good luck!

1 and 5 are wrong- 1) Plenty of gods have had corporal existences, they just have existed in other realms or above us, they have come down in divine, manly , animal forms. 5) Is wrong, the idea that God or Gods are incomprehensible is a distinctly Monotheistic ideal that first came as late as Plato- many other Gods are perfectly human/rational/explainable in their behavours- the unknowingness of God is something that is only necessary to explain a monotheistic spirituality in which one entity is responsible for so many seemingly contradictory functions. Ps Linell is wrong too.
