Socrates

The most interesting and influential thinker in the fifth century was Socrates, whose dedication to careful reasoning transformed the entire enterprise. Since he sought genuine knowledge rather than mere victory over an opponent, Socrates employed the same logical tricks developed by the Sophists to a new purpose, the pursuit of truth. Thus, his willingness to call everything into question and his determination to accept nothing less than an adequate account of the nature of things make him the first clear exponent of critical philosophy.

Although he was well known during his own time for his conversational skills and public teaching, Socrates wrote nothing, so we are dependent upon his students (especially Xenophon and Plato) for any detailed knowledge of his methods and results. The trouble is that Plato was himself a philosopher who often injected his own theories into the dialogues he presented to the world as discussions between Socrates and other famous figures of the day. Nevertheless, it is usually assumed that at least the early dialogues of Plato provide a (fairly) accurate representation of Socrates himself.

Go to the library and get a childrens book on Socrates and get the basics down. Make an outline of all of the things you learned
A. Socrates Medicine
B. Socrates the philosopher
C. Socrates on the color orange (lol)
Then get online and put "Socrates" + any of the simple things you learned about him and added in your outline, in the search web box.
For instance do a search on Socrates, medicine
etc.
Then take those articles and rewrite them using your own words.
Every new paragraph will start with a new subject. For instance your first paragraph might say where he was from and how he grew up and where he started getting his ideas from, who was HIS mentor etc.
Second paragraph might talk about his education.
Third paragraph might focus on his thoughts on medicine and how those thoughts are viewed today.
Fourth paragraph might focus on something very personal and interesting about him...
Fifth might be your closing...maybe say how he is still quoted today, or when and where he died, who he influenced and still influenes.

Keep track of the internet sites you visit so you can make a reference page to hand in. Use these sites and your kiddie book for your references.

Ta Da...a report.

Socrates (470–399 BCE)
- was an ancient Greek philosopher
- widely credited for laying the foundation for Western philosophy.
- born and lived in Athens, where he spent most of his time in enthusiastic pursuit of wisdom.
- was known as the wisest man in all of Greece.
- due to his controversial questions and the allegedly uncanny effect of his presence, opinions about him were widely polarized, drawing very high praise or very severe ridicule.
- had many devoted followers (such as Plato, whose subsequent teachings amount to his great contribution to Western Philosophy), and many angry detractors.
- as an old man, he fell into grave disrepute with the Athenian public powers, and was eventually commanded to cease and desist his habitual public conversing, and associating with bright Athenian youths. But he carried on as usual :-)
- was arrested and accused of corrupting the youth, inventing new deities (heresy), and disbelieving in the divine (atheism). According to traditional accounts, he was sentenced to die by drinking poison, or else leave the country as an exile.
- he felt no fear of death, and he believed it would be more honorable to stay in his home country than to leave. Therefore, at the age of 70, he drank the hemlock and died.
