I once read a story from Feudal Japan. A young and proud Samurai asked this same question of his Sensei. At that, the Sensei pulled out his sword and attacked his young student, cursing him for a fool. The student was confused, but tried to defend himself, to little avail. His Sensei heaped scorn on the student's technique, his behavior, and his family, saying that the student was worthless, a disgrace to his family and to his ancestors. Finally, the student was in a corner, and utterly ashamed of himself, he lowered his sword, so the Sensei could end his suffering and kill him.

The Sensei lowered his sword, and smiling kindly, said: "That is Hell.", and reached out his hand to help his student up.

The student, realizing that his Sensei was only trying to teach him, and was not truly angry at him, beamed in happiness that he was not dishonored, and everything was right in his world.

The Sensei smiled again, and said: "And that is Heaven."

Almost everyone agrees that Heaven is a spiritual realm, like another dimension, so we can't just look up at the physical universe and say it's up there somewhere. That's beyond our comprehension. The Bible , however does descrribe hell as a physical place, but many disagree about what it actually is. Most think it's the place where bad people burn forever. Jesus went there as stated at Acts 2; 27 " because u will not leave my soul in Hades , neither will u allow your loyal one to see corruption. The suffering Job prayed to go to Sheol at Job 14; 13. My favorite scripture to show what Hell is though is at Revalation 20; 13 , 14 "And the sea gave up those dead in it, and death and Hades gave up those dead in them, and they were judged individually according to thier deeds. And death and Hades were hurled into the Lake of fire, this means the second death, the lake of fire. Hell, Hades , or Sheol must mean mankinds grave, where the dead r buried. Remember God's words to Adam after he sinned " For dust u are and to dust u will return."

Heaven is being close to God.

Hell is separation from God.

Both are states of mind.

Not physical places.

I always thought Earth was Hell... The "burning lake of fire" is the molten rock at the center of the planet.
