Finding family in other places?

Question

Are there any websites that have free services for finding family members in other parts of the world or a family tree. I know my family spans from Germany to America [even to sri lanka.. i duno how but..] i'd like to maybe speak to some or just find them so I know they're out there. Anyone know how?
