I don't want to give him the wrong idea (I only like him as a friend). I just want to have lunch with a friend.

I assume you're actually wanting to know ways to ask him to lunch. I suggest you have a group lunch with many friends and personally invite him along. You could also tell him about some new place you've been meaning to try, but you don't want to go there alone.
The key is to ensure it's not akward. If he feels the same way, then you'll have a wonderful lunch and your friendly bond will grow stronger.

Sure it's ok to ask him out to lunch. If there isn't any chemistry between you two, and you both think of each other as just friends, then i don't see the harm in having a friendly lunch.

If you two have been friends for a long time he should just that you are just friends, it's just two friends going out to lunch. If hes a good friend he should know that and not suspect or want anything more.

Sure, just tell him the place has a lot of hot chicks he can check out. You should also be checking out the hot guys!! Believe me if there is going to be anything between the two of you it will happen regardless - even faster if you act like you're trying to push him off on somebody else. Give a few mixed signals if you really want to get him going.

If you both agree to a platonic relationship, there should be no qualms on asking him out for a harmless lunch.
Depends on if this is the first time you've asked him or not. Because if it's a regular thing, he won't notice.
Unless, you do have feelings you're not aware of... otherwise, you won't have doubts asking.
And if your guy feels the same way, why worry?
