Adding hot water to espresso is called an "Americano." So your answer is, no, adding hot water to any kind of coffee should not make one ill unless they have an unusual stomach!

Not if the water is good. In places where the water must be boiled beofre drinking, adding unboiled water to a boiled drink would make the drink unsafe. In first-world countries where the water is clean, however, it's fine.
