New surgeons - i.e. surgery residents work very long hours - they are restricted to 80hrs. a week, but may go over that.

Once out of your residency, it depends on what kind of surgeon you are, who you work for, and how much money you want to make. Surgeons generally have some type of call - when they are responsible to cover emergency surgeries at the hospital they work at, and this may mean weekends.

In a hospital there are surgeons there 24/7/365. Most surgeons however work from around 7 to 2 or 3 doing scheduled procedures. They generally do this 5 days a week, so it's about 40 hours. There's lots of overtime depending on the specialty. They can work upwards of 60 ours easily. It's a hard job, but one to take pride in.

I know some surgeons work only 2 days a week - not even 16-20 hours. Gynecologists would fit that description.

If you're a neurosurgeon like Dr. Ben Carson - you could still be working 100 hour weeks depending on the patient load.
