Am going to Bangkok, Chang Mai, Chang Rai, and Phuket or Ko Ko Phi. Wondering if there will be curfews that will affect being able to see things like the Night Market in Bangkok, etc.

Travelling to Bangkok or any parts of Thailand for this matter during this period is definitely fine. There are no curfews in place or anything terrible happening. Trip can still go ahead as planned. Night markets, weekend markets etc will still be open till late, so you can still go shop till you drop.

However, i would really discourage you from going to the South of Thailand like Hatyai, due to the muslim unrest over in the South (at the Malaysia/Thailand border). But the areas you mentioned in your question seems pretty fine to me.

Am a frequent traveller to Thailand myself. i haven't encountered any problems and was there on the 1st day of the military coup in fact, and did not encounter any terrible happenings. Hope this info helps.

Do enjoy your trip. :)

I was there in Bangkok when the coup happened (and for about a week after). The only thing that is noticeable is that there are soldiers with big guns hanging out all over town. It has changed NOTHING.

Tourist went to the government section of town to take pictures with the soldiers by the tanks. All smiles.

There are NO curfews or anything. Even the night of the coup itself. The only change was a SLIGHT drop in traffic that day and no English speaking channels (CNN BBC etc). The shopping malls were packed it was business as usual. Later that day everything was fine, TV signals were back on etc..

The reason I think that there is not more of an issue is that the folks there were unhappy with the Prime Ministers dealings for a couple of years. In addition to that the current king was in support of the action and this king is SUPER popular with the people.

Go.. have a brilliant time and go early to the night market or you'll never have any hope of even seeing half of the stalls.

Cheers

Bangkok is fine; and is back to normal. There's no evidence anything even happened now. There are certainly no curfews that will affect your visit here. Some visitors may have postponed their trips because of the recent events, but that only makes those who do visit even more welcome.
Good luck.

i've got been to Thailand countless situations and that i've got alays felt prefectly secure over there. in spite of if i've got not extremely been on my own, i've got spent extremely some time walking around on my own and that i'm lady! The thai's are very friendly and once you're a terrific decide of character then you definately will confirm if somebody is dodgy or not! i assume that it relies upon on which factors you bypass to. I extremely have been to Bangkok, Samui, Petchabun, Phuket etc. it is totally busy and touristy in December as properly which you should get to attach with some human beings. wish you have a great time!

Just make sure you don't try any political protests or try driving into a tank like one Thai man did 2 weeks ago.

Night Market in Bangkok? hmm that is expensive and charges tourist prices.

Raise another question about things to do in Thailand if you want to know more.

As I understand from my friend in Bangkok, things are normal there. The recent coup actually did not cause any problem to the visitors. And it was contained mainly in Bangkok. It should be alright for you to travel as planned. As for myself, I will be visiting in a couple of weeks time too.

Thailand:

Negative advice for non-essential travel to the 4 southern provinces of Thailand: Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Songkhla.

Thailand is open for travel, but keep clear of demonstrations and public gatherings. Not wise to visit the old center of Bangkok where one finds the government buildings.

16 september 2006, two foreign tourists died in an attack at the touristic center of Hat Yai, province Songkhla.

No effect at all, not even from the first day of the coup. Life was very much normal (except the sight of tanks and armed soldiers then). Go ahead, and enjoy this beautiful country (the places you selected are the major destinations, good choices).
