I am 46. Due to health issues, haven't been able to secure employment, & have absolutely no money for schooling.
I do have an associate degree (Commercial Art), but need to go back to school to learn marketable skills - I'm thinking something in the health field.
Does anyone know how one could go back to school if you're basically totally without the financial means?
Please, only serious, mature answers.
Thanks for any help.

1. go to http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ right now and fill out an application for US. government grants. You do not have to be employed to get money. You will need your tax returns, bank statements etc. The site will tell you everything you need.

2. Public colleges are the cheepest. A Cal State University is cheeper than a University of California.
Talk to the financial aid office of a public college you want to go to about other grants and scholarships available. People donate money to colleges just for scholarships. The financial aid office can also reccomend good websites to go to to find other scholarships.

3. I don't know your whole situation, but because of your health issues you may be considered disabled. Colleges that accept federal grant money (its hard to find one that doesn't) are required by the government to accomadate people with disabilities. Talk to the Disabled Students Services & Programs office at the school you want to go to about scholarships specifically for people with disabilities (if you qualify).

Financial Aid For Unemployed

Yes it is possible for you to attend school and be unemployed, I did so you can to, I decided to go back to school two years ago being that I was unemployed and it was so very hard finding a job that would work around my child who is a special needs child, I decided to pick myself up and Go back to school and learn to be a Medical Assistant, I did get a student loan and once you graduate from school this is when you will have to pay back student loan, And please note that there are Grants such as a Pale Grant that you may qualify for and with Grants YOU DON'T HAVE TO PAY BACK, Unlike a student loan. If for some reason you have not found a job after you graduate be sure to do what is known as a Deferment Hardship, This way you can pay back the loan once things come together money wise for you which would mean once you LAND that JOB. WAY TO GO. I wish you the best AND be PROUD of yourself for going back. One is NEVER to old to further their EDUCATION. Take care.

All local colleges have access to grants, the Pell grant you don't have to pay back and it covers all of your books including tuition and a little extra for gas etc. Then there are some grants that you have to pay back at a low interest rate and you don't have to start paying them back until 6 months after you graduate. You can and should apply for financial aid at your local Department of Human Services this is the time when they can help when you have no means of income. I know this because I have been in your shoes and if it wasn't for what I just told you about I couldn't have gone to and completed college. Good luck.

Yes, it is possible to receive financial aid when unemployed. Have you tried your state's department of vocational rehabilitation? It is their job to help those with health and medical issues to return to the workforce. I also recommend talking to the unemployment office. Also, there is FAFSA.ed.gov if you return for your Bachelor's degree in the form of grants and loans along with need based financial assistance from the college. In addition, if you plan on going into the medical field, there are scholarships devoted to that field which can be located via Google.com and Yahoo.com. Finally, there is a limited number of private scholarships available from companies and private organizations with some of them updated on a regular basis. Good luck!

That's the best time to go back to school, when you are unemployed. You should be able to get pell grants. Plus if you are going into the health field there are all sorts of grants and scholarships for that. Fill out the FAFSA online and you will find out what you will qualify for from the government.

Of COURSE you can!!! All you have to do is fill out your FAFSA form online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. If it's due to health issues and you're on disability you may be able to get more than that typical amount of money from the government.

You can apply for local financial aid and I'm sure you would get a ton of support. A friend of mine has no money or income and her financial aid pays for all of the classes and she gets to keep the leftover money.
