My male lovebird was paired ever since I got him and his mate recently died. He looks so aweful and isn't acting himself. None of my bird books help. Any help?

Spend more time with your guy, even if it's sitting in front of his cage and reading a book :-) . He'll recover eventually, but he'll need your company by pulling him out for some free flight time or playing peek a boo. If he's hand tame, bring him out and play with him. If worse comes to worse, you may want to consider getting him a new cage mate. Parrots can have intensely strong bonds to their cage mates and can literally die of broken heart. The good thing is that birds can and do recover. They'd have to do this in wild as death is frequent in the forests of the world. Often all it takes is spending some extra time with your bird. Spoil him! My cockatiels, after some weeks being confused with the disappearance of a mate will gradually pick a new mate when a new bird is placed with them. It's just a matter of patience and time.

Good luck! Sorry to hear about the death of your second bird **hugs** . There shouldn't be any problems in the end.

Aww, that is really sad. I'm sorry for your loss! I have never owned birds, but my only suggestions are to maybe get another bird to be it's mate. I don't know how well lovebirds overcome grief, but maybe this will help him to move on. I've also heard that putting a mirror in the cage really helps single birds feel like they have another bird around. They chirp to it and everything sometimes apparently. Best of luck!

Try teaching him some tricks. I had a lovebird that would talk, and she picked up on words like "Come Here", and she would blow kisses. Also, some soothing music will help.
Whatever you do, do NOT try to get him another mate. They may reject each other, and they will actually kill each other.
Lovebirds pick their mates for life, and they do not accept a new mate very easily.

Best of luck.

Sorry for your loss. If you could bear it, let your other lovebird free...its the same ting....a partner dies and the other party pines away and being locked up doesnt help matters....birds like humans feel grief too.....

Other way is to buy another female lovebird budgerie for him and hope he gets better soon.

The poor baby needs a new friend. If you want to focus on him as a pet, you can go ahead and offer him the attention and cuddling that he's used to, and bring him wherever you go, like she was, but if you can't do that, he needs something else that's close to the level of intimacy he had again. Even if the new bird is housed side-by-side in another cage at first, it will make a difference.

If you need time to decide or set your wallet in order, for now you can get him a "Budgie Buddy". It's designed as a budgie but most birds like to make friends with it, and it talks to them: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=5820&N=2003+113745

ohhh I'm so sorry for your bird.
I have a parakeet and he is so adorable and I couldn't imagine him being so sad.

Maybe you should try asking a vet or someone at a local humane society
maybe buying a new bird will help or just waiting for time to pass

I hope he feels better soon!
