Originally we were going to get him a toy box, but his grandpa is making one instead. He already has pull/ride on toys. We bought him some clothes, but looking for a BIG gift idea. Thinking of buying another savings bond, but we buy him those every 6 months, so another wouldn't seem that spectacular. Anyone have any other ideas?

Hi! Our son just turned one on Sept. 14th. We got him Big Knob puzzles, books, clothes, etc. But his 'big gift' was one of those Kangaroo climbers (Made by Step2). He just loves it! He is just a bit short to get himself up onto the platform by himself, so we put a non-slip footstool underneath. Now he can climb up by himself. He can't get enough of it!! Another idea to consider is the SwingAlong Castle (Made by Little Tikes). We thought about this one, but our son already had a swing. So we went with the other one. They can play with both of these until they are about 4. So they both would get a lot of use. Both can be used indoors or out. We have our son's indoors now since it is getting cold outside. We put an interlocking foam play-mat underneath, so he has a soft landing when he slides. I included two links so you can see what both items look like. I hope this helps. Enjoy your son. You are the parents of a soon to be 1 year old. Time to get serious. He does not need a big gift for his birthday. He will not remember it was his birthday for another 4 or 5 years. If you want to get something that will last until he understands what birthdays are get him a bookcase and begin putting books in it. Start with picture books now and build his library as he grows. You will be giving him the gift of reading, something to last his whole life.

What if you were to get a high dollar gift certificate so the parents could choose exactly what they are in need of?
Or… you could start a college fund. I think many banks require a $1000 deposit to open the college account. Then you could invite several other friends and family members to put money in it each month. It’s easy for someone to drop $10 to $20 a month in the account and if you have several people doing this, then there will be a lot of money there when the child is of college age.

The thing about "big" is that a 1 year old doesn't care. If you give him a dog biscuit he'll put it in his mouth and giggle. You could get him some kind of heirloom to put away for later in life. Maybe a pocket watch with a picture of grandparents in it. He'll value that when they're all gone.

A family portrait would be nice, or start a scrapbook for him to keep of his early photos, cards, etc. The best gift you can give him is to love him and make him feel secure and confident.

I think the savings bond is a great idea! He won't remember what toy you got him for his first birthday, but when he's ready for college he will definently remember you!

many of the big box stores like walmart or target have a plastic fun table that you could try. They have different activities on the top of them to help build a toddlers learning abilities.

How about a tricycle or one of those ride-around cars from Little Tykes or something. My daughter was one when we bought her a cozy coupe. cute.

One thing could be a swing set, or maybe a sandbox. Also, a little motorized car is always a favorite.
