it does when i say it. Its just your accent. American English is comprised of sooooooo many diffrent influences that it just happens. Like the word "Knee" back in the 1600's people said the K, now they dont, that simple.

You gave a bad example of identical letter combinations making different sounds, but sometimes they do.

Take the "gh" from the word "tough",
and the "o" from "women",
and the "ti" from "nation",

and pronounce the word "ghoti".

I use British english and it does sound the same to me. Maybe you can try asking the people around your neighbourhood say those words and see if there is any diiference.
