I recently found out that my dog has hip dysplasia in both hips. The vet suggested acupunture and I was just wondering if anyone has done this with their dog. If so, did it work well?

Acupuncture works great!!! It is defiantely worth a shot.

I would not use Rimadyl except on a very limited basis. It has some very serious side effects and many vets no longer dispense it. If your dog does go on Rimadyl you will need to take it in periodically for liver function testing.

I've never had a dog with dysplasia but one of my dogs has calcium deposits on his neck - was very painful and he had acupuncture treatments (3 laser treatments) over 1 1/2 years ago and he's been great ever since. If your vet suggested it, I would definitely go for it!

Look that's a bloody good question, a friend of mine took her dog to the chiropractor (did a lot of good) it was found to have some discs out. Has your dog no tail, if not, this is one major factors in hip displasia in dogs. If you believe acupuncture may lesson some of the pain then go for it, but first could the dog loose some weight? But if dog has no tail, you may being paying for the dogs acupuncture for the rest. Good luck, I am pleased your vet (he's a rare good one) suggest alternative treatments, marvellous!!!

Hip dysplasia is a congenital birth defect that is gotten from the parents not being checked for it BEFORE they were bred. I would see if the vet would put him/her on rymadil (sp) or glucosomin / controtin (available at Walmart) to see if that helped.
I have never heard of acupuncture being done for that.

I take our lab in for chiropractic and acupuncture. It's made a world of difference. She is 9 and can still go hunting.

i don't know about acupuncture, but i had a golden retriever with hip displasia and we used to give him half a baby aspirin when it would really bother him. he was 100pds, so the amount you give your dog would depend on how big it is, it seemed to work well with our dog.
