I've read that it is poisonious but are the effects long term or is the associated anemia only short lived?

For the idiot that can't read, the kitten 'accidently' ate some onion. I did not feed it to him. Uneducated people without basic literacy skills are the ones who are unfit to keep pets.

Onions are toxic to cats and can cause severe anemia...If I were you I would take it to the vet immediately.

Listen people...Onions are not good for your cat cooked or raw. Please treat the onions as if they were poison to your kitties....

VET NOW !
Make sure it has plenty tissues on hand!

Please also check out the internet for various sites which list every day poisons for cats!

hope the poor thing is ok!

Onions contain a compound which is toxic to the red blood cells of cats. The red blood cells are destroyed and this results in anemia. The specific type of anemia is called 'Heinz body anemia' because the red cells develop an abnormality called a 'Heinz body' which can be seen under the microscope.
In the past, when a cat would not eat, baby foods were sometimes used to coax the cat to eat. Unfortunately, the baby foods contained onion powder, and some cats developed Heinz body anemia from eating the onion-containing baby food. Caution should be used in feeding 'human' food to cats because it may contain ingredients that cats cannot tolerate, such as onion.

Garlic contains a compound similar to the one in onions that causes Heinz body anemia, however, the garlic compound is much less toxic.

it depends on how much u determine as a alrge quantity!? generally speakin the kitten shoudl be okay. keep an eye on the faeces. if the faeces is runny then it is clear that the onion has passed through. this will be normal however if they continue to be runny for more than a day i would get the kitten to the vets. It no faeces are bein passed get him to the vet immediatey. it will probable give him the runs but other than that he should be fine. if you are worried i would go to the vets anyway. its better safe than sorry!

See if it is choking. If not, see if it the poo is solid . If not, take it to the VET immideately. I have two cats now, my second one had the same problem when we first bought it. It had to be in the hospital for a few days but it was only 8 weeks at that time . Your 13 week old should be able to take it . Watch out for that Poo...

I don't think it's an outright poison like antifreeze, asprin, or rodent poison.

I am surprised she would eat a "large quantity". Hopefully she will throw most of it up. If she does throw up it's best if she fast until tomorrow to give her stomach and intestinal tract a rest. To morrow you could give her a jar of baby meat (NO ONION or garlic in it). Chicken or turkey would be easiest on her stomach.

Sit around here asking stupid questions to get attention. What do you think, nimrod? Take it to the vet IMMEDIATELY or a 24 hour emergency veterinarian. You sound incapable of caring for a pet.

I'm sure it'll be ok. smelly breath though!! if he gets the trots or is sick, then it's time to get it to the vets. make sure our kitty has lots of fresh water, this may make him/her thirsty.

keep an eye on it, it must really like onion, it's unbelievable that a kitty could devour such a strong tasting vegetable!

hope he/she is ok, good luck xx
