My two-year-old female cat has been defecating on our bathroom mat for the past few days. Her litter box is kept clean and fresh as often as possible, so it's not that. I'm not sure why she has been doing it. It may be to mark her territory, since my housemate's male kitten has been coming into the bathroom, and she likes to drink from the bathtub faucet and considers the bathroom "her" place. Can I spray white or regular vinegar to deterr my cat from using the bath mat as a personal litter box? What else could I do?

Actually we do recommend vinegar to help mask the smell of cat urine on carpet, if you don't mind having a room that smells like a pickle. Whatever you do, do NOT use ammonia...it's too similar to cat urine in smell and will actually encourage cats to add their own scent to it. Enzyme cleaners will help to remove the cat smell as well, but it can be quite costly, especially if you have to use it repeatedly while trying to figure out the best way to deal with kitty and her newfound habits....

Is it possible to add a litterbox to your bathroom? Don't move an existing one that can create too much confusion. Simply add a new one to the bathroom (behind the toilet, perhaps?). You might find it's as simple as that.

Put moth balls on your bath mat, and move the litter box to the bathroom for a couple of days. That way there is a place for her when she can't go on the bath mat. After acouple of days, move thelitter box back.

It is usually stress, if it is ongoing, see a vet for sure. It can be a medical thing.

No vinegar is not the answer. You need to take your cat to the vet because it may be a medical problem. If that is not the reason then the cat is stressed for some reason. If that is the reason you can try a product called Feliway it reduces the stress and gives them a calm feeling.

you probably need two litter boxes..one for each kitty...It might be that your kitty doesn't like to use the box when another kitty has used it.
Is it possible that the new kitty has been using the rug as well?

Actually ammonia and vinegar can make them come back. You need to find an enzyme type cleaner just for pet urine.
