First I thought flowers, but he should check with his girlfriend because some people are allergic to flowers and then that would be terrible.
Do they like board games? If he is going to hang out all day, they may need something to pass the time.

A movie. Find out what the mom likes and then get a used copy from one of the local video stores. Not too much money, very thoughtful and can be enjoyed over and over.
