I am becoming certified for in home child care and need to be insured, but seem to be having trouble with my dog.

I am not willing to part with her either she has been a part of my family for almost four years.

my dog has been around many young children who are new to her, and never has had a problem. If parents don't want their children with the dog that is fine, there are different child care providers they can go to.

My dog isn't large she is only 26 inches high and 40 lbs hence "bull"
she is smaller than the pits and staffordshire terriers.

Many online companies cover renter policies with pit bulls, rot wilers, etc. Go to: http://www.insureme.com/landing.aspx?Refby=613178&Type=home

My husband sold insurance for many years and he says that you will not be able to get a rider (insurance for the day care added on) for the day care with a bull terrier which i believe is consider by insurance companies to be a pit bull.. To get renter's insurance is possible. Some insurance co. do not ask about dogs or press the situation. But, if asked, you must answer honestly because if something happens you will not be covered and a lot of bad things could happen. I absolutely hate this dog/insurance thing and maybe what we should be doing is trying to change that some how. I have to say though that i agree with all the people who said dog/daycare not a good idea. Good luck.

I agree with Candy...you're looking at a very dangerous mix here. And no, I don't support breed bans, and I'm sure your dog is a gentle giant, but I am realistic enough to recommend that you not hold a daycare at your home, even if you WERE able to find an insurance carrier.

Parents will undoubtedly have a hard time trusting thier children with such an enormous dog onsite -- even those parents who have large dogs themselves. Candy's right, maybe you could put your skills to work at a daycare center somewhere.

As for insurance, there are several homeowner insurance companies that will cover breeds that others won't, but I don't know of any that offer renter's insurance for the same.

I'm sorry. I know this isn't much help...and it's probably not the answer you're looking for...but it's probably best to face these facts now rather than after you've spent enormous amounts of time and/or money in pursuit of this particular endeavor.

Best of luck to you.

due to the problem with STB's and there reputation you are going to have a very HARD time finding the coverage you want, its not the normal renters insurance because in a house you don't own you [a] want to run a business with small children and then [b] your breed of dog.

Personally I dont think I would risk the mix and YES I have a pit bull before you say I dont know what I am talking about, we have coverage for her via our house insurance BUT doubt even with me owning the property that I could mix the two dog and business. Plus to be very honest I would NOT wish to leave my kids in the care of someone that the dog had access to them and that's ANY dog as they may be great with yours but what about mine.................it only has to turn nasty once and that is EVERYTHING you have ever owned and anything you may ever own taken away, to cover the damages.

How about with those great qualifications you work at some of the better day cares..........

I think the chances of you finding the insurance you seek are almost zero. Even if you could, the premiums you'd have to pay would probably be more than what you could make from child care.

Insurance companies determine coverage based on risk. No one is going to want to take a chance on having to pay several million dollars to a child's parents in the event of an unexpected mauling...no matter how unlikely you think it is. Even a one in a million chance is more than they'd be willing to accept.

If you don't have papers on your girl you could always register her as a terrier mix or just a mutt.
