Many of the answers here could make me feel offended because I´m mexican, but the only thing I can´t stand is people saying that Mexico has a leftist government in power that´s SO not true. ( thank God).

Okay Junior Jet Ranger... the wall is to prevent ILLEGAL Immigration and to reduce other ILLEGAL trade across our borders.
Regarding the US not investing in Mexico: In 1994 President Bill Clinton granted Mexico a $50 billion loan to helps stabilized the devalued Mexican Peso.
The US Government and Business invest billions each YEAR in Mexico, And in 2005, Mexico had a $65 Billion trade surplus with the US...
Mexico has the MONEY... Corruption and crime continue to be serious and chronic problems; according to the World Bank together they may make up as much as 9% of Mexico's GDP
Mexicans immigrating (illegally or otherwise)to the U.S. sent more than $20 billion to Mexico last year;the country's second largest source of foreign income after oil.
Laguna Verde is a Mexican nuclear power plant. Mexico's only such facility, was built against the wishes of most of the local population. The plant consists of two General Electric Boiling Water Reactors (BWR-5).
I could find no evidence regarding Mexico's possession of plutonium, so I can't debate that...

The question is an interesting and appropriate one, Your following comment is very well put. However I don't quite follow the relationship between the two - I'm missing a link somewhere.
At this moment I don't suppose a nuclear program would be considered a threat to the US. But if someone like Obrador, the labour leader, were to become president, then suddenly a nuclear program would possibly be considered as threatening. It's unfortunately. If there were a respect for different forms of government in friendly nations, there would be much less cause for fear.
I agree with you that the best 'wall' would be to help increase the number of well paid jobs in Mexico. They wouldn't be wanting to leave Mexico if they could make a decent living there. After all who wants to go to a land where you will be looked down on and called disrespectful names, if you can make a decent living in your own land?
We more 'developed' countries (I'm Canadian) have been profiting for many years from the economic vulnerability of less developed countries such as those in Latin America.

Mexico's problems are NOT the fault of the US. It's the fault of their own corrupt government by letting its people starve in the streets and where theirs no jobs. Their solution is teach their citizens how to sneak illegally into the US. America isn't trying to stop immigration from Mexico, that is just stupid. It's ILLEGAL immigrants the citizens have a probelm with.
But don't worry. The US government isn't going to do anything about it. The Democrats don't want to do anything because they know full well that a vast majority of those illegal immigrants would be supporters of their party. And the Republicans don't want to do anything because of their business buddies getting cheap labor from them.
I and many others like me have no problem with Mexicans migrating to America, as long as they do it the legal way. The way for things to get better in Mexico has nothing to do with America. The Mexican citizens need to get off their asses and start forcing their government to start doing their jobs. Because all they're doing right now is taking everything for themselves and sweeping their problems under the rug.
And "under the rug" = "crossing the US border illegally"

What pot are you smoking? GM, Hamilton Beech, RJR-Nabisco, and just about half of the textile manufacturers have built factories in Mexico to assist Mexicans with better jobs. Quality control of items made in Mexico and other poor nations are crappy the least. If Mexico were to make weapons grade plutonium then yes it would be a threat to the US now that Mexico has a leftist government in power. Mexico is not a waste dump for the US. They are dumping their wastes on us for every illegal that comes over the border. The illegals are bleeding America dry period. You need to wake up.

I don't think Mexico will try for a long time to obtain Nuclear weapons. You bring up an even better point. It would be vastly cheaper to dump money into Mexico's economy then build an infective wall on the boarder.
