Vietnam's location didn't affect it's wealth. Having a central controlled economy, invading and occupying Cambodia, being embargoed by the U.S. and the collapse of the Soviet Union is why Vietnam was so poor.

Vietnam had been the third poorest country in the world, but is now the second fastest growing economy in the world.

All of Vietnam was under communists control after the Vietnam War ended. South Vietnam was still more advanced economically than the North, but that was destroyed when the communists took over businesses and factories in the South.

Vietnam invaded and occupied Cambodia soon after the Vietnam War, which caused a trmendous strain on the already shaky economy. U.S. and other countries slapped an embargo, which didn't help much either. China and Vietnam had a short war during this time, which close that door of opportunity. This left only the Soviet Union and communist block countries for Vietnam to trade with, and all of them are poor.

The central controlled (communism) economy completely collapsed by 1985. The communist leadership started Doi Moi, which was change the central control economy to a maket economy. Vietnam's economy took off like a rocket starting in 2000, and became the secodn fastest growing economy by 2005.

Vietnam is expected to join the WTO and the U.S. is expected to give Vietnam normal trade status very soon. This will likely make Vietnam's economy advance even more rapidly.

actually the location is indeed its wealth.

Once the government can help the people more, the rice crop will be the world leader once again like it was 30 years ago.

Having traveled there 4 times and married to a fine woman from there I have learned much about the culture of the farm and the economy.

The key is the government working with the famers and branching out to the world economy.
