I live in Virginia Beach, VA... and my question is... I am thinking about renting a table at a church " flea market" in the next two weeks, and was curious if to help raise some money, if I could bake homemade pies, cakes, fudge and whatnot and sell it without a license? In some states i know you dont have to because its less than 12 times a year... some states it doesnt matter... Please help!!!!!!

all you have to do is ask the church that is running the flea market if they require you to have a liscense to rent one of their tables. They'll know if you have to have one or not.

If you are raising money for your church I can't imagine that you would need a license to sell food. If you are raising money for yourself why don't you ask the people renting the table to you? They really should know. You could just go ahead and do it, if you need a license and someone finds that you don't have one what would happen? Would you get a ticket or just be told to close up? Personally, my opinion is the government could stay out of a lot of everyone's business and do what they do best, spend all of our money.

It's not going to be a problem. Tons of people sell baked goods at an event like that. And they sell very well, cause people get hungry from walking around. Just make sure everything is cooked well, and you might want to list the ingerdients on a card in front of the pastry, so know one gets an allergic reaction or gets sick!

While I can't help on your specific state, in Iowa is what totally normal, no permits, licenses, just a bunch of people selling baked goodies. Just remember to keep them covered. And don't keep any "bad" food in the sun for too long. I honestly don't think a health inspector will be walking through. Plus, I believe since it's religious, it's protected.

Check with your state or local government for license rules. Are you selling something unique? Maybe the owner is tired of doing it or you could add to the mix? Start by talking to owners. You will probably have to spend some money on health dept issues. I bet there is an association of vendors who travel around to different events...art fairs, etc. Do some research on the internet.

That's great Irina - except she lives in VA......

No, you don't need a license, and you don't have to charge sales tax either....are all the proceeds going to the church? Just curious...
