Does anyone else think it's morbid and creepy to have a method of execution represent a religion? And where did that bad marketing idea come from anyway?

Ummm... I'm not Christian. So all of the answers telling me how un-Christian I am, it's moot.

I'd really like to know who decided it was THE symbol for Christianity. Was it a Pope? Or Constantine? Somebody else?

Lenny Bruce had a joke about that... to the effect that if Jesus had been killed in recent times, all the catholic schoolgirls would go around with little electric chairs around their necks.

There's a long history of crosses being used as symbols. The christians probably borrowed it so that people of other religions would find it easier to convert. After all, there are plenty of things that the christians borrowed from other faiths.

See the linked source for details.

You don't read history do you?
Do you have any idea how Christan's are killed today, just because they say the have faith in God?
Your so safe, in your home, no harm can come to you?
Your not safe, the world you live in, the Government. Most lie to you. There is truly nothing to believe in but the Cross.
Morbid an creepy is a child being set on fire in Pakistan because he went to Sunday school.
Morbid and creepy is when 3 Lady's get 3 years in Prison for teaching the child, and you know what, if they have no family to feed them while they are there they starve.
Morbid and creepy is when they blind fold a preacher, and through him in a well of gas and lite it.
Morbid an creepy is when they cut off arms and legs of children and cut the head off, in the presents of the parents,
all for the cross sake,
What do you believe in so strong your willing to die for it? This all happened last month.

For those who think the cross is acceptable as a symbol of God's love, think about this: If your son or daughter stood between you and a would be prowler and was killed by a dagger in the scuffle, would you rush right over to the jewelers the next day to have a replica made of the dagger so you could wear it around your neck to remind you of your child's sacrifice??? Not me--and I know God's love is more powerful than mine.

Yeah, i suppose if Christ had been given the gas chamber, xians would worship little clouds of toxic fumes. It is all idolatry. If it supposedly about his "message", why not use a rock as the symbol of the stone rolled away from the tomb

I agree its kind of creepy to have the symbol of your superhero to be a particularly sadistice method of execution. Whatever, it's all fiction anyway.

How true!! Jesus is said to be a carpenter, no symbolism. He is said to be the fisher of men, symbolism of the fish (isn't that what he's suppose to catch?). He died on a cross, big symbolism, (the Romans get credit for the method of execution). He is suppose to be the son of God, God come down in human form (but poorer than a church mouse, doesn't say much for the riches in heaven). People, his friends and comrades, lie when asked about their relationship to him and these are the men who supposedly wrote the word of God that we are suppose to follow. Hmmmm might be some contradictions here?!!

It is not the method of execution that is being symbolized. It is the sacrifice that was made on that cross. The shedding of innocent blood for the sins of mankind.

it is not the thought of a method of killing that is represented in the Churches, it is the fact that Jesus got off the cross, he rose form the dead to save your sins. and if you look at how he was on the cross, his arms were spread out as to say " i love you this much"
it was not a marketing idea, it never was, it was the way to kill the worst of the worst criminals. to put them on display for the towns folk to see the worst criminals die by suffocation.

Christianity isn't about the crucifixion...it's about the resurrection!!

The cross is a symbol of the sacrifice that Jesus (who, being fully God, knew was coming) made for the rebellion of man against God. With this rebellion out of the way, we are able to talk directly to God...

The Catholic Church is the faith that concentrates on that horrible act...

It is creepy. That is why Jesus will not return. Everyone wearing those crosses give him bad memories and the HibiJibis.
