My Pit Bull, Petey, is a crazy wagger! He is so happy and wiggles his whole body including his huge tail. He has "broken" it before by hitting it (extremely hard) on the corner of a wall. It just hung there limply for over a week, but it healed and is now fine and he's back to wagging and knocking stuff off of the coffee table! My beagle mix, who wags, but not as much as Petey, also had a limp tail problem once. I don't know if he hit it on something or what, but there was definitely a problem with it. I took him to the vet and there wasn't anything he could do for him. It eventually got back to normal! I know it is very sad to see them not wagging, but in time it should get better.

Dogs can develop what is called "cold tail" and their tail will just hang in a limp position. If this is the case, it will only last for a few days. (this often happens to retriever breeds that have been swimming.)BUT,,,, It has never happened to one of our Beagles.

They don't "overwag". It probably got injured. The muscles around it could have been strained or it could be broken. If it isn't causing him any pain leave it alone. If it hurts the dog take him to the vet for pain medication. There really isn't a lot they can do for a broken tail.
