When Adolf Hilter came to power in 1933, he established that all Germans were "Aryans," or the superior race. Anyone who did not fit this criteria was a Jewish person. Many Jews also wore the star of David and had identity papers revealing their religion. Some Jewish people forged their religion on the papers, saying they were Christian, and they were able to escape from the lethal grip of the Nazi regime. Others hid in friend's homes. Sadly, millions of others fell victim. Over 1000 Jews survived the Holocaust; 6 million did not. The Holocaust was never supposed to happen again, but genocide is happening right now in Darfur. Rwanda and Columbia also suffered from horrible genocide. We shall remember those innocent victims.

Nazis made Jewish people register that they were Jews. This was before the Nazi party got REALLY crazy.

Jewish people were defined as Jewish if their mother was Jewish, so there is kind of a way to tell even if they didn't have them registered (although this made it much easier). They probably got the people who didn't sign up by hearing through word of mouth if they were Jewish but not registered.

Many jews did not hide their faith and refused to do so, even under the extreme pressure Nazism exerted. The Nazis developed loads of 'tests' too, mainly to do with the dimensions of the features, skull and body (although how realistic these were is anyones guess). Another method they used was to reaserch the census and track people of jewish ancestry that way: information that would have appeared on their passports.

mostly papers, but sometimes they assumed people were Jewish because of the way they looked, etc., and were wrong. a lot of people who were not Jews ended up in concentration camps and work camps.
