I've never tried getting to the center of a question mark. Nor have I considered licking it.

A group of engineering students from Purdue University recorded that their licking machine, modeled after a human tongue, took an average of 364 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. They tried the same licking test on 20 volunteers and found that the average licks to the center were 252 licks.

Depends. Different Tootsie roll factories will have molds of different quality, leading to a different texture, and sometimes even a different shape.

The exact candy components may also change a little, different sugar/syrup/flavor mixes can make tootsie pops with different lick-resistance factors. Different pops will also tend to have the tootsie material located somewhat off center in different areas, larger, or smaller than with other pops.

The weather can also have an influence. Humid weather tends to keep the candy moister and softer with each lick, while high humidity can solidify the candy, and dust can actually make it thicker.

Different people also have different skills with their tongues, different textures, different length, and different saliva chemistry, all of which can affect the final result.

Different animals also have trouble. Mr. Seal finds that his tootsie pops sometimes just dissolve away in sea water before he even licks them.

Mrs. Snail on the other hand complained that her husband's tootsie pop was so dry that it caused him to shrivel up and die before he got to the center.

Mr. Owl, being the smartest though, assures us that it does indeed take just three licks to get to the center.

You mean a watermelon, right? I tried it but couldn't do it. Maybe I'll have to call a professional watermeloner in. If it is a tootsie roll you are talking about you could just bite it and save all of those licks for the watermelon. (but then your teeth would stick together, darn, thought I had it!!)
