You didn't say what kind of bird or if you have a pair (male and female). Birds can lay eggs with out a male but they will not hatch because they are not fertile. If there is no male bird, there will be no babies and the female will just keep laying eggs. This stresses out the female and the eggs should be taken away from her as soon as they are laid. Just like chickens they will continue to lay eggs until their cycle is over. I have two female cockatiels that have laid eggs in their seed cups and got very angry when I took them away but it was for their own good. They would sit the eggs until they spoiled and exploded under them causing them a great deal of stress.
If you have a pair (male and female) look up the particular species on the net and it will tell you how long the incubation is.

Parakeets sit in their eggs for about 17 -19 days. They'll lay about 4-8 eggs. They will hatch in the order that they were laid and the babies will wean in about a month. Parakeets are supposed to be really good with their chicks and will go as far as peeling the shell off their babies as they hatch.

Good luck! I'd love to get into budgie breeding :-) .

Different kinds of parakeet take different lengths of time to hatch, but if it's a budgie, it will take 17-19 days, and the chicks will fledge (fly) in a month. Set them up with a box and some pine shavings if they don't already have one. It'll protect the babies from chill and infection. Budgies will usually move right along with their eggs without a problem, but if they take a while, the eggs will be fine if they're under a big warm lamp.

A male bird must have bred with the female in order for the eggs to be fertile.
