The toaster in my house is very old about 125years. It is brass with a fork end. You spike the bread on it and hold it close to the red embers in our coal fire. Lots of butter and hmmmmmm

I am not sure when, but I do know that the first ones were for putting in a fire. (Fire place of stove.) The invention of electricity just streamlined the process. (I would guess around the late 1700s maybe?)

just saw this tonight on Antiques roadshow this guy had lots of electric toasters..
The first electric one he had dated back to 1909 and was simply a porcelain base with a few electrical coils and when one side of the bread was toasted you had to turn it by hand.
If you check out http://www.bbc.co.uk/antiques and search for the show you'll probably be able to see it!
EDIT FOUND IT!

if you mean to the popular toaster:
The pop-up toaster, which ejects the toast after toasting it, was patented by Charles Strite in 1919.
but - patened - not that he was the first, but this happened to other inventors....
