You don't. 4 months isn't really long enough to get to know someone in my opinion. I dated my b/f for 3 years before we moved in together. I didn't really get to know him until we'd been living together for a year. Take your time. Anything worth having doesn't happen overnight.

Have you two had sex yet? If you have then there's no reason for him to lie about loving you... Some guys do in fact lie about it to get sex. You should trust him, but if you feel a little weary about it and you haven't yet had sex. Then keep waiting till you're 100% sure that he is. And do you love him? It seems like you should take things slow. 4 months doesn't seen long enough for someone to "love you". I mean to really love... it takes time to feel that way.

Oh girl, you asked a big question! Does he offer you the remote control, or the last piece of pizza or pie? Does he make you breakfast in bed? I don't know how to tell when a man is lying, but usually, actions speak louder than words.

I wonder by your question if you two have sex yet. If not, is he saying this to you after the fact you two have talked about sex, and decided not to. And yet after agreeing not to have sex, he is still trying to get some. If SO, let keep telling him you don't want any, if he really loves you he will wait.
If it is NOT sex related, maybe he does love you or loves the fact of being with you. Ask him what makes him love you. Decide between his answers between key things that make you feel good and those answers that are stupid. (BUT make sure you tell him you really dig him BEFORE, so he does not feel weird and think you thinks he retarded for saying he loves you. and that you don't care about it).

i think by you questioning that at all shows a serious lack of trust in your relationship, and you guys aren't really ready for any commitments yet. So, just hang in there, and if he acts like he loves you, especially the times when you are cranky and upset, you can tell if there really is something behind his words.

if you haven't went to bed with this guy, don't if he loves you he will accept your not going to bed with him.
if he gets mad when you say no then the only thing he wants is sex......
