As some of the answers provided so far bare witness, it is assumed that their religion is the only right one and that their god is the only true god. If you are not their religion and do not worship their god as yours then you are godless, thus atheist.

I hope you realize that the statement Christian implies that all Christians assume this. They do not, only the ignorant and biased. I am a Christian and you might be Jewish. I am taught to love, not hate. If you feel that some Christians assume this, then the answer would stand. They are ignorant and biased.

Because they have an "either or" mentality. It is black or white, wrong or right, good or bad, christian or atheist. But it doesn't really matter. To them if you are not one of them you are going to hell anyways, so you might as well be one of us horrible atheists. Assuming is one of the christians greatest talents.

Sorry they have no respect for your beliefs...whatever they may be.

I'd say that might only apply if the assumed athiest was a white, non-Jewish American, because statistically it is more likely they are an atheist than some form of spiritualism or buddhism or the like.

i'm a chrisitan..and that is not what i think..you could beleive in all sorts of things islam, evolution, big bang, or you could be an atheist....so you need to change your question to why do some Christians assume if youre not a Christian youre an atheist?..not all christians think this way and its not fair for you to just judge and say that thats what we all think because it isn't

christians have this concept that their faith is the "in basic terms" real faith, and that i assume it impacts a number of them in techniques that some human beings could experience to be damaging. I, on the different hand, have self belief that folk could shop on with even if is of their very own heart and soul....i do no longer think that by doing so, one will go through the wrath of hells hearth, because of the fact the christians do, i'm basically no longer that closed-minded.

Christians assume that because if you are not a Chistian then you don't believe in God and an atheist person is someone who dosen't believe in God or the devil an atheist just believes in whatever they want to believe in.

I think what is most likely happening in the cases you refer is that the persons whom claimed to not be Christian didn't identify themselves with an alternative religion, therefor implying they are atheists or agnostics.
