The number I've seen recently in magazines is $17,000. But like others have said, who knows if this includes crazy rich people and those who elope.
I know for a fact that my sister's wedding cost just shy of $14,000. It was not super fancy, but it was very nice. They had an open bar all night with a sit down dinner, a limo, her dress was about $800.
Unfortunately, the cost will be largely determined by where you live (or are having the wedding) But remember -- you can negotiate with everyone. Nobody will walk away if you ask if they can do a better deal. It is so worth asking!!

Someone else asked this the other day and I will tell you the same thing I told them... the "average" american wedding is around $22,000 (OUTRAGEOUS) the reason though is that an average is found by adding together ALL the variables and then dividing by the number of variables added.... so when you factor in the hollywood stars and the rich people with no problems laying that kind of cash out you get a larger number than what the truly "average" citizen is paying for THEIR weddings...
If you were to leave out the rich and the famous.... the "average" american is actually probably paying about $7500 + Honeymoon. (This of course varies by location as well, urban will cost more than small towns, and the coasts cost more than central usa)
If you need some money saving tips feel free to email me and I will assist you the best I can. :)

I think that the "average" cost of an American wedding is terribly high (over $22,000!!) but I read the other day some good advice. You need to set a priority list and then a budget and then try to make them meet in the middle. If you want to spend more on the dress (which I think is silly) you spend less on flowers and honeymoon, or if you want a more expensive ring you spend less on the flowers or the reception. The important thing is to stick to a budget. When I hear about people taking out second mortgages on their house to pay for a wedding their priorities are WAY OUT OF WHACK! Just make it fun and spend wisely. Good luck!

I just got married. My parents spent about 15,000-ish on my wedding. David's bridal has really great dresses, and if you buy everything from there, you get all kinds of discounts...for everyone! I wanted a tropical themed wedding in September, so my tropical flowers would have been really expensive. Instead, I went with silk flowers and NO ONE knew the difference. Plus I got to keep the flowers!! Catering is the best way to go. Get someone to cater everything! Hire someone to do everything for you. Worry for you, set up for you, everything. None of my stuff looked cheap, and everyone said it was the nicest wedding they had been to in a LONG time. Hope this helps.

I have heard it's at least $25K if not more. However prices vary depending on where you are located, which people do not seem to take into account at all. Large cities are naturally going to cost more than smaller rural areas.

In the USA 20,000 dollars is now the average.
I personally think that's ridiculous.
