In North America, it is generally Northeast.
Do the best you can. If you can't find the qiblah in time maybe use your best judgement and pray the prayer is accepted?

Don't they pray towards the raising sun?
I remember years ago that Noah in an effort to get the people to spread out told each group to head in this direction.
Shem was told to follow the raising sun? Oriental branch of men
has always been called the land of the raising sun.
Japath the setting sun the white race. Funny they have always migrated in that direction.
Ham was told to go South directly between the two
It was the migration of man or something like that.

If there is no way of finding the Kibla direction and the prayer time is ending, then pray to any direction. Because God says all the direction belongs to Him!

at Mohammed's time, people thinks that the earth is flat so they have to make sure that they are facing the right and only one direction. But now since it is proved scientifically that the earth is not flat so you can have more than one direction and all leads to Mecca even though on could be shorter than the other.

you can only do the best in trying to determine the proper direction..as long as you are true in your intention your prayer will be accepted..i would suggest you find a compass..(they have them for key chain)..ask your Imam for help in the proper direction also...I'm sure he knows..good luck
