I would buy the frost free - cleaning of a freezer is a real pain in the backside

A manual frost freezer builds up ice. It takes time -depending on the fit of the gasket. Tight fit, less ice. How humid is your climate? Humidity is water in the air and the more water in the air, the more ice in your freezer. Is it a chest type? Those are a real pain. You have to empty out the freezer, shut it off, and use a blow dryer to loosen the ice. Then scoop the ice out, bent over to reach the bottom. Your hands get frozen. I really think for an investment that you may have for years, the frost free freezer is the way to go.

I have had a manual frost chest freezer forever. It was actually made 53 years ago, the same age as I am, and was my mother-in-law's before we got it. It still works fabulously, and takes a very short time to defrost. We just purchased chest freezers for each of our children for their anniversaries, and they got manual frost ones as well. There is a plug at the bottom for drainage. Go for the manual if you don't mind doing a bit of defrosting once a year - it is a piece of cake. Remember - the more things that are automatically done on an appliance, the more things that can go wrong. Keep it simple. (Nice bonus offers too!) Best wishes.

ps about horsinround's comment of defrosting being a pain - I don't have those issues with mine at all.

A manual freezer is a pain in the neck to defrost. If it were me, I'd pay for the frost free.
