Assuming that they speak the same language as whites.

Back during slavery when Africans were brought to this country they weren't allowed into the white churches. In fact they weren't even supposed to gather and worship at all. Whites were afraid of what blacks might be planning if too many of them got together (sounds just like today's whites). People have a universal need to commune with their higher power though, so the slaves formed their own worship groups and churches. Not because they hated whites and didn't want to be around them, but because whites hated them and didn't want them in their churches. The tradition has just held on; for pretty much the same reason.

Whites have never not been allowed in black churches. They've just chosen not to be there. Blacks have always welcomed anyone who wanted to attend. The segregation occurred when the whites barred blacks from their churches.

Umm, I've never seen a church that only let blacks in. I've been to churches that are majority black and majority white. The differences come from the style of preaching and the worship music. Some are gospel, some are rock-youthful movement inspired, some are tradtional Anglican church hymns. The reason why they seem like only blacks or whites attend is because people prefer different preaching/worship styles. I like attending both and so do people of all races. I don't really like gospel; I do like the more youthful rock inspired stlyes better.

Don't get majority white/black churches confused with separatism PLEASE. That is not what they are about. I don't even think people realize they are separating themselves.

If you go to a majority black, they'll probably smile at you and hug you and sit you in the front row.

edit: I don't undrestand why people here will go through all the people who are giving the truth- that there is no such thing as a black only church- and give them a bad rating. Why disagree with the truth? Why look for racism in places it does not exist? What is the purpose of asking a question like this? To poke and prod at people or do you really want to know? Are you shocked that the truth isn't that all white churches and all black churches are racist? Do you just not want to believe that? Do you just want to look at a behavior of someone and label them a racist so you can degrade them and feel good about yourself? I just don't understand.

I'll say it again that I've been to both an all black church and an all white church. The reason why they look exclusive is because people prefer different worship styles and that is all.

Nobody gave a damn about what color I was.

That's the truth.

If there was a first part of this question, I missed it. So, I can only say, I believe that some prefer a Black only church as you state. Especially in the south, probably because they feel safer there for good reason. I was always of the opinion that "Black only" churches did not exist because I know white people are warmly welcomed in the doors of the AME churches. I am a Methodist and there are many black members in our church. I see the day when there will be an end to the segregation and racism. I may not live to see it, but I know it will happen.

I find it hard to believe that there is a "Black Only" church out there... do they have a sign on the door that says they won't take any other races?? I go to a church that has a majority of members that are not of the same race as I... I was welcomed with open arms.... and a warmth I never found anywhere else. I suppose, if you are all truly worshipping God, you should not notice the color of the skin of the person sitting next to you nor should you feel uncomfortable with people of different cultural backgrounds than your own.... God doesn't.

Why should there be a black only church, or white only, or spanish only. God doesn't look upon the color of the skin, he looks on the color of the heart. He wants a people with a pure heart, with a brotherly love for one another , he looks for an obedient people. There should also not be a church regarding rich or poor. If there is God's heart will be after the poor. It was hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Hope this helps.

Christians must be impartial regarding race, ethnicity, national origin, and economic means. The call for a "black only" church would not come from a true Christian.

(Luke 20:21) Teacher, we know you speak and teach correctly and show no partiality, but you teach the way of God in line with truth

(Romans 2:11) There is no partiality with God.

(Acts 10:34-35) For a certainty I perceive that God is not partial, 35 but in every nation the man that fears him and works righteousness is acceptable to him

However, throughout history it has occasionally been illegal for different races to worship together. Christians may arrange their religious services so that they obey even the racist laws of secular governments.

(Romans 13:1) Let every soul be in subjection to the superior authorities

There is no need, and normally they may be mainly black, but there is no black only Christian Churches.

There are some churches like the Church of the Black Madona that teaches white people are of satan and that only blacks will be saved by a black jesus that will come. But these are merley racist hate groups that pretend to be churches for tax purposes

First of all I never saw a church for Blacks only. I have seen churches where the majority is black, or white, or Hispanic. You can go to any church you want to. I have been to churches where I have been the minority and it didn't bother me. I would welcome anyone who wants to come to my church.

Everything comes from history. If you live in the south a lot of majority black churches are baptist. A lot of Protestant, Evangelistic churches are white because of history. Over the years things have become more diverse.

But as stated from before there NO ALL BLACK CHURCHES!!!

The reason is the privilege afforded to white people. Black churches allow the members to function in a less oppressed manner. White people have so much privilege that they cannot see it. Even blacks unconsciously afford whites this deference. Black-only churches allow a discussion within a more egalitarian context.

I hope that the need for this segregating stance disappears over the next couple of generations, but I see no evidence of its reduction.

We need to stop this. having seen a black only church, they feed on the ignorance of its followers. If I were an educated black man, I would be appalled. The ministers take the money of already money starved people. Amazing really!
