The distances is significant. It takes binoculars to spot and shooting sticks to hit. I shoot competitively with my father as well so im an ok shot.

I think your definition of "big hole" is relative. I don't care what critter you shoot with a .17. A .223, 22-250, or .204 Ruger is faster, shooting a heavier bullet and will literally vaporize small animals when shot with an expanding bullet. This not saying anything bad about the .17 HMR, I have one and it is my favorite rimfire out west, but it doesn't compare to a good centerfire varmit round.

The bullet is moving so fast that it blows up when it hits. It's size and speed makes it so deadly for small game. I like 22mag. It has a heaver bullet and is slower and it will give you more shock to kill but less damage . It will not shoot as fare but 200 yards is as fare as you'll probably see around this part of the country.

If the hole is too big to suit you, try non-hollowpoints. Heavier bullets have less velocity and may make smaller holes. Shoot some phone books, boards, etc. and see what effects different bullets have on them.

it is the bullet. hollow points are designed to make a big hole. try non hollow point bullets for more accuracy and smaller mess.
