I DO scoop daily, when I come home from work but sometimes by the end of the day as I walk in, I smell the litter, so I was wondering if any litter prevented this more effectively than another

It's not the litter! It's the owner :-) Seriously, they are all very similar, the difference being the scent of the deoderant. If you scoop religiously, as in every single day, you will not have odor problems.

I like Arm & Hammer Multiple Cats Formula - good smell, cheaper than the other brands.

If you check out my 360 blog, you'll see that we now have a 4 cat household! We have two litter boxes and I clean out the clumps 2-3 times a day. This topic is near and dear to my heart!

I recently switched to clumping litter from plain old change it once a week whatever is on sale stuff! Even the worst clumping litter, was better for odor control than that! First, I bought the cheap stuff at Aldi and found that cost does matter! It didn't clump... it sogged. Don't bother with the bargain stuff, it's a waste of money. Wal*Mart has had the best prices, buying the largest size is the most economical. You can save even more with coupons. (search ebay for coupons for specific items that you want)

I have tried lots of different kinds of litter brands since, all clumping. The Arm-N-Hammer brands have been the best! They have a Multi Cat formula that is very good. I also use a deodorizer from Tidy Cats that you sprinkle on after you scoop. After I scoop, I add a new 1" top layer of new litter and a sprinkle of deoderizer. When you walk into my house, you would never know that we have 4 cats. I have a mother in law to proove it....(she would definately let me know if she smelled even a whiff of cat)

Finally, consider the diet of the cat(s) . I have found that ONE of our 4 cats smells more than the others... I think it's because she is the only one that eats canned food. (She is underweight and we are pampering her). SO - changing the cat's diet can make a difference in the smell!

Some cats are fusssy and do not like you to change their litter, so be careful not to disturb their world!

The very best for odor control is, IMHO, any crystal cat litter. When crystals were first introduced (7 years ago?) they were sold exclusively at high end pet stores for $20 a bag. The stores had some of their employees routinely pour ammonia into the litter pan to prove to customers that the crystals absorb odor very well. Unfortunately, many customers were put off by the price tag...despite the fact that the bag of litter would last considerably longer than regular litter.

Today, there are many brands of crystal kitty litter and the price has, understandably, come down. Each brand is as effective as the next -- as long as you don't confuse them with "crystal blends." Each bag will last approximately 21 days if scooped daily, and utilized by one cat -- and it causes absolutely no dust, as so many clay litters are prone to do.

Beware: if you have a dog who likes to "help himself" to the treats contained in a cat litter box, then you'd do well to either NOT use the litter, or place the litter box way out of his reach. And we all know what effect moving a cat's litter box can have on a cat, don't we? :-(

Tidy Cats regular litter is a good one if you keep it changed almost daily.
The crystal blend works pretty well, and most of the clumping litters work well, but none of them are going to keep the odor away completely...just keep it scooped or invest in one of those self scooping litter boxes.

I have two cats and we use Fresh Step litter in a COVERED litter box - I think this is a majorly important thing. Also sprinkling some baking soda or the special stuff that Arm and Hammer in the litter when you clean it is helpful. I scoop my box every other day and my house smells fine.

I found that all of the brand names to be good as long as I sprinkled arm and hammer litter freshener on top. The more litter I put in the box the better it helps with odors.
