If you're male, and women are present while waiting for the elevator, you acknowledge them all with a smile. You don't have to greet them in words if you don't want to but it's optional.
When the door opens, you step to the left of the entrance and hold the door open for the women to enter.
After they've all entered the elevator, you enter and move to the side where the buttons are.
Push the floor that you want to go to and face forward without further eye contact.
You don't have to discuss anything with them regarding what floor they want to go to.
By the time you enter the elevator they should have aready entered their floor destination.
When the elevator door opens, if a woman looks back, you close with smile. This is the proper etiquette for a male.
If you’re a female waiting to enter the elevator, and men out number you while waiting for the elevator, you should remain silent.
When the door opens wait to see what the men do and follow their lead.
If you are the last to enter the elevator, make sure your back is turned to the men and move to the side where the buttons are.
Push the floor that you want to go to and face forward without further eye contact.
With today’s busy society, it’s difficult to practice etiquette when so many don’t use it or know what it is. Those who like the idea of practicing etiquette always have to keep in mind; we can do right by our own actions but never expect others to follow.

I didn't think there would have to be a question on this or written statement on how to act or behave. You stand there and go up or down and get off at your destination. You smile and an occasional how are you may be appropriate. If someone needs to have information on the proper way to behave in an elevator then they need to go back to grammar school and start over.

When waiting for a long time i wonder where the elevator is a how long it's gonna take.
When I'm in it, I look at it to see if it looks safe. I usually don't like going on elevators so I just get nervous and wait for my floor and hop right off.

Well I very rarely have the opportunity to be in elevators except in hospitals. You can kinda tell when people want to talk in an elevator. Sometimes poeple need a little encouragement there but sometimes they have that look on their face like something really bad has happened and you shouldn't get it started..... Everyone needs a smile though! Talking is always ok in my book!

Like a human being. I stand and wait, if i make eye contact with anyone I will speak. hope this is helpful. I did a project for a sociology class a few years back and observed people while riding the elevator, it was something else, i seen a man picking his nose as though he was digging for gold and did not care who was there. Life is full of surprises.

No different than anywhere else really. And I still do not do anything I would not want to be seen doing, since many elevators have cameras in them.

when I am at an elevator, I usually stand back to let the ladies get on first, and in the elevator look straight ahead and up to see what floor we're at...
