car seats don't go by age, only by weight. So don't think about his age when getting the next car seat. try to get a convertible car seat, that will get him through to his toddler years.

Is your son in an infant seat, the carrier kind? If so the next car seat up is usually called a convertible. Most of them can be turned backwards to still face rear and can accomodate children from 0-100 lbs. Some only go to 80 though. The ones that accomadate the most pounds are usually a better buy because they will last longer.
No matter what though do not face your son forward until he is BOTH 20lbs AND 1 year old. Most people think that once a child reaches 20 lbs he can be turned forward but the fact of the matter is most babies do not have enough neck control even at a year and can still be extremely hurt in the event of an accident.

I would get a convertible seat. They go from 5-40 lbs, and we recently bought one for our 5 month old who is 18 lbs. and outgrowing his infant seat. I am sold on Evenflo brand, because that is the brand of infant seat we had, and it totally protected my son in the bad car accident I had in July. He came out without a scratch, while I am still recovering from injuries!
My son now rides safe and snug in his Evenflow DLX Fairview seat. It is rear or forward facing, has 5 tilt positions, and even resembles a baby papasan or easy chair!

A lot of upright booster seat type carseats can accomidate a smaller child, too. I know my daughter's has an option to be placed backwards in the seat but can also be used until 75 pounds.

Hi there, I had the same problem..too big for an infant seat, but too young for a booster. Get a convertible carseat, Britax makes the safest one on the market. The Britax Marathon can stap rear facing up to 30lbs and foward facing up to 65lbs all with a 5 point harness! Here is a link should you like to check them out:

If you buy one of those convertiable car seats that holds babies from 5-20lbs rear-facing and 20-40lbs front-facing and then 40-80lbs as a booster seat you could use that one rear-facing, I put my son in his when he was around 6 months!! Hope this helps you!!

I agree with going with a three-in-one. Most of them convert from infant safe to older baby and toddler to booster seat. The Cosco Alpha Omega is one of the best, but it is kinda pricy ($100+). Although I can almost guarantee you'll never need to buy another one.

Most 3-in-1's are a pretty safe bet. They will be good until he is a toddler.
