hi hon, I have 2 cockatiels who lay a lot of eggs, you have a couple options, mine do not like a nesting box, they have yet to even go into it, and i have tried a couple different things, I keep a good layer of newspaper on the bottom of the cage, my female will start to shred it in the corner of the cage, and make a clear spot, then that's where she lays the eggs.
I was so surprised because of all I have been told about their habits.
You can also try ripping up some news paper and putting it in the cage, she will move it around to make a nest.

Some cockatiels like to have a box, some like it in the cage, some like it outside the cage, (you may have to modify the cage some).
they like it to be darker than the cage and calm and quiet.
When my tiels are laying I move their cage into the guest room, so its a little calmer for them, and there is less disturbance.
anyway I hope this helps. If you have more questions feel free to message me.

Hi,
The answers everyone has suggested are good. However you never said how big your cage is. All my cockatiel's love there nest boxes. You can make one but its just easier to buy one. It's best if you can mount the box on the outside of the cage. With an opening and a perch for them to enter. You can lay some material (but don't use cider chips)on the bottom but a bare box works fine.
Your cage should be at least 3'x3'x3' or more. If its too small they won't breed. Also watch and see if the male mounts her. If he's not interested then just be patient. (Mating is very brief maybe a second or two so be very watchful).
Hope this helps.

As well as the great answer above...some pet stores offer a type of woven nest like a reg bird outside would build and it attaches to the inside of the cage with two wire hooks. Try your local pet store for one of these, and if your birds are used to the area they are in, dont move them, they are comfortable there and it would be more stressful moving them to a different envirenment. Good Luck.

You can get a nesting box from your local pet shop. They're not expensive, and they attatch to the side of the cage (although you may have to cut some of the wires on the cage).
Then it can be lined with some newspaper and whit pine shavings. It really is inexpensive to do this.

You can use a USPS large square Priority box and change the box out once its chewed up or pooped in, to keep things clean. Or you can use any kind of plastic food bowl big enough to hold the parent birds. Use PINE shavings for bedding. Go to the pet shop with about $40.00, buy a breeding box and shavings. I have breeding birds for 20 yrs now.

Cut the bars of the cage to make a big enough hole for them to get out. Then cut a hole in the side of a coffe can and attach it to the cage on it's side. They'll take care of the rest. Good luck!
