That's a really good question because some form of religion turns up in pretty much every culture going back as far as history takes us.
My only guess is that evolution has given us consciouness and while many of our thoughts are instictual in nature (lust, fight or flight, hatred) we do have the power to ponder philosophical questions...the idea that this world is all there is is very depressing. People don't want to think that they will ever really die for good and creating gods to worship allows us to escape this fate in our minds and also allows us to justify our evolutionary violence (suicide bombers, crusades, etc.).

The soul is an eternal piece of god that is in each person. some have experienced spiritual reality's some have not in there long road to god realization, some are like little bitty tiny Small young children. who have not learned a thing. but some have in there souls journey have learned a few things, so obviously the ones that have learned something wont more. that should be obvious . but we all have to learn sometimes. there is allways the first step on the road to god realization.good luck.

In his book Man, God and Magic, Ivar Lissner commented: “One can only marvel at the perseverance with which man has striven, throughout his history, to reach outside himself. His energies were never directed solely toward the necessities of life. He was forever questing, groping his way further, aspiring to the unattainable. This strange and inherent urge in the human being is his spirituality. . . . Man is not content merely to sleep, eat and warm himself . . . All the civilizations of mankind that have ever existed were rooted in religion and a quest for God. Without faith, religion and God, civilization is inconceivable.”
Nineteen centuries ago, Jesus Christ said: “Happy are those conscious of their spiritual need, since the kingdom of the heavens belongs to them.” (Matthew 5:3) Hence, although material prosperity may bring some pleasure, from this history lesson we learn that true happiness results from cultivating and satisfying our spiritual need.
From this we can see that it is implanted in us.

Its a good question for sure. there's an interesting book by a neurosurgeon called "Why God Won't Go Away."
He is neither for nor against the idea of God, but he makes some interesting observations as to why humans might be hardwired to have spritiual experiences or to believe in God.

First we were created for worship, our spiritual nature will worship something.
Second, when man fell that worship of God became bent and was turned to self.
Third by the regeneration through being born again in Christ our natures were again made to worship God in spirit and in truth.

because we have a spirit, and it's desire is to worship, everyone has it, some worship wooden statues, some satan, some a brass statue of a fat man, and some the Living God, the God of Abraham. we decide who we worship but all of us worship someone or something, including athiests, they worship themselves, the inherent need to worship though comes from the SPIRIT.

Humans have a deep-seated need to be in control of their environment.
For those things that we can not control, we can at least get an illusion of having SOME control by engaging in prayer.
You notice that people never pray for that which they do control -- "Oh God please let my shoelaces be tied."

Perhaps because God made us to Glorify Him. So we have an inborn need to worship.
