the sooner classes start, the sooner they get over. Labor day, is labor day. I don't feel it is a "major" holiday, and some schools get that day off anyway.

It does really matter.While in school, We started after Labor Day but while my son was in public school ( he is now home schooled) he started before Labor Day.He got out sooner than I did.

I like when schools start before. This year, for instance, my high school had a three-day week, then a four-day week, and then a five-day, regular week. Starting a little before the holiday gave the students a way to ease into the new year, what with all the days off and weekends. It was great for the teachers, too :-)
