Both practices show a lack of taste and appeciation of food and drink. Food should be eaten from a plate - even if it is a sandwich, it needs to have a plate on which to rest between bites. (Don't knock the sandwich, Brian Turner does some lovely ones. I wish I could make mayo as good as his). Beer need to be consumed from a glass - you miss half the taste drinking directly from the bottle, as the 'nose' (aroma) of the beer contributes greatly to the taste of this fine beverage.

I do not think one sees the average epicure walking down the street eating foie gras from a paper bag and drinking Chateau Lafitte directly from a bottle!!

Swigging beer from a bottle is a perfectly acceptable thing to do as is eating on the hoof when in a hurry. Why would either of these be unacceptable?

Yes it is. Drinking beer from the bottle has become so commonplace that it's practically normalized; however, as has already been said one will not appreciate the taste of the beer properly.

Eating 'on the hoof' is common, vulgar and never forgivable. Better to go hungry. You might _think_ you don't look out of place walking and eating, but you will, and people with manners will judge you for it. Pret or no Pret!

yes, as long as when eating you eat something that will spill down your front and make you messy, not matter how much you belch drinking beer from a bottle the eating will be grosser unless you drink so much that you vomit all overyourself.

My granny would probably say yes as she thought eating on the street was the lowest of the low. However, I think nowadays when it is so common to see businesspeople in suits with their pret a manger wraps, it is more acceptable.
